Judy Martin is a painter and teacher also known as the author of a number of practical art books. She has been living and working Brighton and Hove for over twenty years and exhibits most years year in the Artists' Open Houses during Brighton Festival, usually opening her own house to show paintings, drawings, prints and mixed media work.
In recent years her work has been concerned mainly with figure and portrait subjects drawn from a variety of sources: the images are allowed to evolve in ways that may take them beyond the original subject, resulting in a combination of observed and invented elements. Surface qualities are important, each picture is uniquely formed by the materials and processes used.
The work showing at 126 Norwich Drive this christmas is a mix of smaller paintings and prints based on animal imagery, a pleasing diversion from the complexity of Judy's larger series works.
