I went to a wood turning demonstration by Roger Slater. A fine turner and, as it transpired, an excellent teacher and inspirational support. I was fascinated, watching the shapes materialise and the beauty of the wood being exposed under Rogerís gouge. ĎIíve got to have a go at that!í I said to Susie, my wife.

Two years on and I have developed my skills under Rogerís guidance. The moment when the finish goes on to the piece and reveals the full glory of the wood is still as big a thrill now as it was the first time. I try to explore the forms revealed in the wood as it is turned. Often designs have changed radically in response to features exposed as the turning has progressed. Most of the wood used has been given by friends. Fallen or felled trees from the Charente Maritime turned in to

objects of real beauty.
